New State Secondary School Opened Monday

Large Crowd of Visitors Attend Opening Exercises

The State Secondary Agricultural School began the fall grind Monday morning with an attendance of three hundred and seventy-five. Professor Mitchell, Superintendent, said this was the best start the school has had, and that he expects the enrollment to mount steadily during the next few days, then all pupils will buckle down to work.

The following program was rendered for the opening exercises: Prayer by Rev. E.B. Norton, Pastor of the First Methodist church, then students and visitors were addressed by Mayor J.E. Jordan, C.H. Greer, Rev. A.H. Reid, Pastor of the First Baptist church, Rev. E.B. Norton, Rev. D.C. McNutt, Rev. .C. McQueen, Professor Nichols, Vocational teacher , Rev. Taylor of the Mignon Baptist church and Professor Mitchell, Principal of the school.

The following teachers will have charge of the classes:
Miss Stewart, English; Miss Tigner, Music Department; Miss Simpson, Home Economic; Miss Hendrix, Expression; Professor Nichols will have charge of the vocational work as last year; M. Holcombe, History; Mr. Treadwell, Athletic director, and will have charge of the foot ball team.

Crowther Makes Interesting Talk

Prof. C.S. Crowther made quite an interesting talk before the Sylacauga Exchange Club Tuesday evening in observance of Constitution Week, which is being advocated by all patriotic organizations throughout the nation.

Prof. Crowther’s subject was the Constitution of the United States. He made quite an interesting talk which was full of information.

Mr. C.H. Greer, who has been absent from the Club for several weeks on account of his absence from the city was present and made quite an interesting talk.

There was no business of importance to attend and the club adjourned following Mr. Greer’s talk.

Much interest is being taken in the club under the able management of its President, J.F. Mitchell, who is now arranging weekly programs of short talks from various members of the club on different vocations and businesses.

P.L. Moseley Defeats J.E. Jordan For Mayor

C.E. Turner, L.L. Smith, F.M. McDonald, J.W. Brown, Jr., and Dr. J.D. Ratchford Win For Alderman

Perhaps there was more interest manifested in the election held in the city Monday, to determine a Mayor and board of Aldermen, than has ever before been shown in a city election held here.

There were a total of 479 votes tallied, and voting was brisk all during the day.

The political fight seemed to be centered on P.L. Moseley and J. Ed. Jordan, candidates for Mayor. At the beginning of the campaign the fight was waged between Wm. M. Landham and Dr. P.L. Moseley, both having a well divided following, when Mr. Landham withdrew from the race, leaving only Mr. Moseley as a candidate for mayor, following the withdrawal of Mr. Landham, Mr. Jordan entered the race and made a whirlwind campaign of a week. Mr. Moseley defeating him by a vote of only 67 majority.

In the race for alderman-at-large, C.E. Turner defeated T.R. Mathews by a vote of 27, and J.W. Brown, Jr. defeated C.C. Peters as alderman from Ward Three by a vote of 143; while Dr. J.D. Ratchford defeated Mr. Jos. Hawkins in the race for alderman from Ward Four.

L.L. Smith from Ward One and F.M. McDonald from Ward Two were without opposition.

Sylacauga Gun Club Has Shoot

R.H. Vardaman Leads Fifty Shoot – R. Johnston Beats Cather 1 in 75 Shoot

The Sylacauga Gun Club held its third shoot of the season Thursday afternoon at the Fair Ground, with about thirty taking part in the shoot. A marked, improvement was shown in some, over the scores previously made.

Owing to the fact that the members have reached the decision that it will be more convenient for a majority of the members, the shoots will be held each Thursday afternoon instead of Friday afternoon.

Following is the score made at Thursday afternoon’s shoot.

Mrs. Al Crumpler, and children, who have been spending the summer in Virginia, were the guest of Miss Julia Crumpler enroute to her home in Birmingham.

Dr. J.O. Handley Loses Home By Fire

News was telephoned into the city Thursday morning about 9:30 o’clock that the home of Dr. and Mrs. J.O. Handley at Sycamore, was being consumed by fire and that another nearby house was threatened.

The message also stated that while Dr. Handley’s home would be a total loss that most of the house-hold effects and furniture had been removed.

Dr. Handley had only a short time ago spent several hundred dollars in having his home improved, and had one of the most beautiful homes in Sycamore.

City Politics Takes On New Phase

Wm. Landam Comes Out Of Race — J. Ed. Jordan Enters

Monday a flurry was caused when it was announced on the streets that Wm. M. Landam had withdrawn from the race for Mayor, leaving P.L. Moseley, his opponent, alone in the race.

This was quite a surprise to his many supporters, as Mr. Landham had made a through canvass of the city and had developed quite a strong following.

Mr. Landham gave as his reason for withdrawing from the race was to keep dissension from the church and orders of which he and Mr. Moseley were both members.

Following the news of Mr. Landham withdrawing from the race, Tuesday morning, J. Ed. Jordan announced as a candidate to succeed himself to the office. While Mr. Jordan only has a week in which to make his campaign, his followers claim that he will develop quite a strong following.

Mr. Moseley was induced to enter the race at a meeting of several of the citizens several weeks ago, when the following ticket was put out: PL. Moseley, Mayor; T.R. Mathews, Alderman-at-large; Leonard L. Smith, Alderman Ward One; F.M. McDonald, Alderman Ward Two; J.W. Brown, Jr. Alderman Ward Three; and J.D. Ratchford, Alderman Ward Four.

Wm. M. Landham announced later as candidate for Mayor, with C.E. Turner on his ticket as Alderman-at-large; C.C. Peters as Alderman from Ward Three, and Jos Hawkins as Alderman from Ward Four.

C.E. Turner, C.C. Peters and Jos. Hawkins are still in the race.

Mr. Jordan’s announcement follows the withdrawal of Mr. Wm. M. Landham from the (….illegible….) his record made during the last administration.

Accidental Shot Kills Boy of Five

Talladega Youth Meets Death While On Visit To Neighbor

Talladega, Ala. Sept. 9

John Shadrix, 5 year old son of J.A. and Mrs. Shadrix, was instantly killed today by the accidental discharge of a pistol believed to have been fired by himself.

John with his brother, James, 7, and father and mother were visiting a neighbor where the shooting occurred. The boys were playing in an adjoining room when a shot was heard.

The pistol hung on the wall but was taken down by the boy it is thought. When found, John lay on the floor with a bullet wound through the corner of his mouth. James was not questioned because of his age.

Sylacauga Public School Opening

A Strong Faculty Has Been Selected – Enrollment Expected To Be Large

The Sylacauga Public School will begin its 1924-25 session tomorrow morning, (Monday) September 8th. The opening exercises will be held at 8:30 and all patrons and friends of the school are asked to be present.

The faculty for the year is:
Misses Mary McDiarmid, Marian Harmon, Maude Hebson, Zada Davis, Emily Slocomb, Ruth Keahey, Laura Payne, Mamie Snellgrove, Carolyn Johnston, Messers. Hal C. Graves, Hubbard B. Smyth.

Mrs. W.J. McLeod will have charge of the piano class and Miss Virginia Street, will again be in charge of the expression classes.

The Junior 1, and Junior 2 high school classes are being organized in order to place the Sylacauga schools on the 6-3-3 basis, as recently aproved by the State authorities.

Six Home Boys Known to Be Safe

Who Took Part in the Last Big Drive Against the Hun.
Relatives Notified

Relatives in the city received messages Tuesday afternoon from the following young men who took part in the last big drive against the Germans just before the armistice was signed, announcing their safety:

Watt Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Jones

Wallace Horn, son of E. Horn

Capt. Wm. Burns, son of W.A. Burns

Lieut. Howard Parker, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Parker

Capt. Jeff Greer, son of C.H. Greer

Tempie Allen; sister, Mrs. O.B. Nickerson

Mrs. Otis Levie Dead

Mrs. Otis Levie died at the home of her husband on Walnut Street, Thursday evening at 7:15 o’clock, following an illness of several months duration.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church, and took much interest in all church organizations.

The remains were interred at the Marle City cemetery, Friday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. Rev. F.L. Aldridge conducting the funeral services.

Mrs. Levie leaves a husband, three children and her father, T.M. Jacobs, to mourn her departure.

Miss Tempie Batson, who is teaching at Choccolocco, spent the Holidays with relatives in the city.

Mrs. Blanchard Brown and little son, of Gadsden, were the guests of relatives in the city last week.

Frank Hamilton, of Gorgas, was in the city Monday visiting Misses Ruth Burkhead and Zera Smith.

Mr. and Mrs. McDuff Saxon and little “Billie” of Birmingham, spent holidays with relatives in the city.

G.A. Bishop, of Route 2, was in town Monday marketing meat which he killed during the recent cold weather.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stone, of Montgomery, spent several days in the city last week, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Brown.

William and Cristine Moody spent the first of the week with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Moody, in Talladega.

The many friends of N.F. Higley are glad to see him back at his work after having been confined several days with the “flu”.

The many friends of H.T. Kelley are glad to see him out …. again after having been confined to his bed several weeks by illness.

Miss Titia Steward has returned from Birmingham, where she was nursing Mrs. Thornton, sister of Dr. Whetstone.

Mrs. Cliff Ward and little daughter, Inez, of Commerce, Ga., were the guests of her sister, Mrs. W.A. Moody, this week.

F.M. King, of Childersburg, was in the city Friday en route to Attalla, where he has charge of the office of the Shelby Iron Works.

Misses Annie and Iad Brockman and Miss Anne Thompson of Talladega, spent Christmas in the city with Miss Mary Brockman.

Mrs. Necie Neighbors left Monday for Talladega where she will take charge of the boarding house formerly run by Mrs. W.P. Hamner.

Rev. and Mrs. Crawford A. Tatum and children of Talladega spent the Holidays with Mrs. Tatum’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Stewart.

Miss Vernie Bearden, relief operator for the Central of Georgia, has accepted a regular position as night dispatcher at the local office.

Mr. and Mrs. Rufus B. Simms and Miss Mamie Simms, of Blountsville, were the guests of their daughter and sister, Mrs. Adin Batson, last week.

The O.K. Pressing Club has moved from their old stand in the rear of Thompson’s Barber Shop across the street in the building with C.W. White’s barber shop.

Lieut. Leonard L. Smith arrived in the city Monday after having received his discharge from Fort Meade where he has been stationed. He will resume his former position with the City National Bank.

The U.D.C. Chapter remembered the old soldirs in and around Sylacauga in a very substantial way Christmas day, which was greatly appreciated by the old veterans.

Lieut. Rosco Roberts, who has only recently been mustered out of the aviation service, is in the city, visiting his father, G.F. Roberts. Lieut. Roberts is contemplating locating in the city.

Dr. D.C. Batson, who has been in the Manhattan Ear, Eye and Nose Hospital, spent Christmas with relatives in the city, and left Monday for Birmingham Infirmary.

Mrs. Ralph T. VanDeusen, Chairman of the Red Cross Christmas Roll Call Committee wishes to thank the chairman and committee for their splendid work during the Red Cross Christmas roll call campaign.

Davis – Avant

A marriage of interest in Mignon was that of Miss Lilie Avant to Mr. W.E. Davis, which took place Sunday morning, December 22, at 10 o’clock, at the home of the bride’s mother, Mrs. Josephine Avant. The room was beautifully decorated with Christmas greens, lighted with white candles. The couple entered the room to the strains of Lohengrin’s Wedding March, played by Mrs. M.W. Parks.

The marriage ceremony was impressively performed by Rev. Geo. W. Wilburn, of Mignon, and was witnessed by a large number of relatives and friends.

The bride is one of Mignon’s most popular young ladies.

The groom is from Warsholes, S.C. and for the past six months has been one of the valuable employees of the Eva Jane mills, being a young man of exceedingly fine character and business qualities.

After the ceremony a delightful dinner was served. Mr. and Mrs. Davis will make their home with the bride’s mother.

Hammett – Bice

The marriage of Miss Vincent Bice and Mr. R.H. Hammett was solemnized at the home of the bride’s mother, Mrs. Ella Bice, Saturday evening at _____, December 21.

Surrounded by relatives and friends a most beautiful ceremony was said by Rev. W. Barnes of Mignon.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammett will make their home in Mignon

Inzer – Smith

The home of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Smith was the scene of a beautiful wedding Tuesday evening at eight o’clock, when Miss Marie La Mittis Smith, the lovely daughter of Mr. Smith, became the bride of Chaplain John W. Inzer, of Mobile.

The home was beautifully decorated for the occasion with Russell Roses.

Before the ceremony Mrs. W.H. Brannon sand sweetly, “Because.”

Dr. Baker, of Birmingham performed the ceremony.

Immediately ater the wedding Chaplain and Mrs. Inzer left for Camp Dodge, Iowa.

The bride is a charming girl and possesses many fine qualities of mind and heart, which have endeared her to a large circle of friends, who wish for her every happiness.

Mr. Inzer is a successful young minister of Mobile, where they will make their home.

Stone – Brown

A wedding, which was a big surprise to the friends of the bride in the city, was that of Miss Mary Lee Brown to Mr. Jack Stone, which took place in Montgomry on December 19.

An enjoyable event for the holidays for the young set was the party given by John Milton Hightower Monday evening.

Mrs. R.S. Hunt was hostess at a lovely rook party Friday night, complimenting her niece, Miss Sue Oliver. After several interesting games, Mrs. Hunt served a delicious ice and salad course to thirty-two guests.
