Talladega, Jan 26 — J.E. Montgomery, Jr., 14 years old, struck his father, J.E. Montgomery, Sr., at their home in Eastaboga, over the head with a plate during a temporary fit of anger causing injuries from which he died several hours later, according to word received in Talladega Saturday. The alleged killing occurred at the breakfast table about 7 o’clock Thursday morning. Reports state that the lad was removing food from the table to feed his dog and was reproved by his father. Becoming angered the son grasped a plate and struck his father over the ear with it, fracturing the skull and penetrating it and causing injuries from which he died at 9:30 Friday night. Solicitor J.B. Sanford will investigate the incident.

Mr. Montgomery is survived by his widow, one son, J.E. Jr., and three daughters, Francis, Elizabeth and Mabel. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon.

Sylacauga Man’s Daughter Will Be Hanged in Atlanta

Mrs. Hughes, of Atlanta condemned to hang for the murder of her mother-in-law is the daughter of Mr. R.A. Allen, of Sylacauga, better known as “Bud” Allen. She also has three sisters, who reside here and are employed at the Avondale Cotton Mills. Mr. Allen has been a resident of Mignon and Sylacauga for number of years and is in a very feeble condition. He has been unable to work for several years.

Store Burglarized Late Saturday Night

Talladega, Jan 28 — Somewhere in Talladega Monday there is a bunch of unknown burglars who are enjoying a tobacco feast at the expense of W.J. Morris. Burglars entered the store of Morris on East street late Saturday night and stole boxes of cigars and cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff and candy. They entered by smashing a window in the front of the store. Morris estimates his loss between $40 and $50.

Boy Scout Organization Perfected

There was a meeting of the District Scout Committee in Sylacauga Tuesday afternoon, presided over by Mr. Strickland, of Anniston. The meeting was well attended, with most of the organization present and some others, and much interest was shown in the work of the Scout organization. The constitution of the organization was read, adopted, and partial reports were made from various committees on Scout work, and plans discussed for the scout work here. The Scout organization seems to be on a better and sounder basis now than it has in a number of years, and with the business men behind the movement as they are now the Sylacauga troops will soon be brought up to required standard. Reports showed that the enrollment is growing daily, and that much interest is being developed among the boys.

Mrs. J.P. Roberts was a visitor in Birmingham the first of the week.

Misses Wilma and Agnes Meadors, who are visiting Mr. and Mrs. McCrary in Goodwater, were in Sylacauga Tuesday afternoon.

Miss Dixie Ree McKinnon has returned from her home where she was called on account of the death of her brother.

Judge and Mrs. Hammett came down from Talladega Tuesday evening to attend a tea given by Mr. and Mrs. John Ed Wallis to the employees and their families of the Hammett Hardware Company at their home on Norton Avenue.

The bankrupt stock of Page & Strickland has been purchased by Mr. McGhee, a merchant of Columbiana.

The Sylacauga Motor Car Company is now occupying their new warehouse just completed.

The new cotton mill addition at Sycamore is nearing completion and the town is to be incorporated.

The citizens in the Herd’s Gap community have asked for a school tax election and will build a new school house.

Born to Dr. and Mrs. J.C. Waine Sunday night a boy.

Mr. and Mrs. Pruet visited the parents of Mrs. Pruet in Ashland Sunday.

Dr. French Craddock who was ill for several days last week, is able to be out.

Bill Ratchford visited his mother in LaFayette Sunday.

Ed Turner visited Birmingham the first of the week.

Mrs. R.C. Stewart is visiting her sister in Birmingham.

Mrs. Ed Prather has returned home after a visit to her father in Rockford.

Mr. Guice spent a few days in Atlanta this week.

Mrs. Sam Rubin has returned from a visit to Selma.

Mrs. King has returned to her home in Chattanooga, Tenn., after a visit to her daughter Mrs. J.W. Brown, Jr.

Mrs. McCall has returned home after a visit to her daughter Mrs. Fred Hebson.

Miss Frida Goldwassai, of New York City is visiting her sister Mrs. Sam Rubin.

Mrs. Mae Tray, of Atlanta is visiting Mrs Eugene Smith.

Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Dunnam, of Selma have moved to Sylacauga. Mr. Dunnam has a position with the Batson Grocery Co.

The Wise and Otherwise Club met with Mrs. Zula Crumpler Wednesday afternoon. The program was devoted to Science and Discovery. Delicious refreshments were served.

Death of Mrs. L. Witt

Mr. Harry Witt and Mrs. M. Goldbderg were called to Birmingham Wednesday of last week by the death of their mother, Mrs. L. Witt. Deceased was 80 years old at the time of her death. Quite a large family survive her.

Death of Miss Chandler

Talladega, Jan 28 — Miss Henrietta Chandler, age eighty-five died at the home of her brother, J.T. Chandler, at Chandler Springs, Sunday afternoon about one o’clock as a result of burns she received in the early morning when her clothing caught fire from an open fire place. Miss Chandler was a member of a well known family. For fifty years she was postmistress at Chandler Springs, being appointed to that office when it was established and held it until a few years ago. She made her home with her bother, J.T. Chandler.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. J.H. Roberts, pastor of the Methodist church at Chandler Springs, and interment took place in the family grave yard.

Walco News

Mr. Tuxworth’s family arrived here Sunday from Logansport, La.

Mr. and Mrs. Ward, of Walco, left Thursday night for their home in Bogaloosa, La.

We had three new pupils enter our school Monday, Ruth and Victor Barnett from Wylam school in Birmingham, and Rosemary Tuxworth from Logansport, La.

We have chapel service together in our school only once a week. On Monday morning a health program was given. Master Jack Burk and Murray McClusky recited, and Jack Bankston and Mildred Pickle sang a song.

Mr. Tuxworth and family visited the school this week during chapel. We are always glad to have our parents come to our school.

Mr. Ellis, of Mignon, will preach this Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Our fifth grade took first place in the county, on test for comprehension in reading which was given by our County Supervisor, Miss Caldwell.

Daughter of Gen. Harrison Burned To Death in Opelika

Opelika, January 7 – Another victim of the open fireplace was claimed in a most tragic manner early Monday when Miss Mamie Harrison, dutiful and accomplished daughter of the late Gen. George P. Harrison, at one time commander in chief of the United confederate veterans – burned fatally.

Miss Harrison was standing before the open grate in her room when her gown caught fire and in a __sh she was enveloped in a sheet of __e. Her screams awakened members of the family, but when help arrived she was found to be terribly burned, the burns having penetrated __ply into the flesh of the upper part of her body, her shoulders, arms, neck and face, and some of ___ flames having been swallowed in ___ frantic struggles.

Medical aid was summoned immediately and trained nurses were hurried to her bedside, but all that could be done was to relieve the agonizing suffering with opiates. At 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon, 12 hours after the tragedy occurred, the victim quietly passed away.

Miss Harrison was well known throughout the south, particularly among the veterans of the Confederacy, for she was a regular attendant with her distinguished father, ___ the annual reunions. She possessed a wonderful soprano voice with which she delighted thousands of the veterans at their reunions. The tragedy cast a pall over the entire city

Court Reporter Takes Testimony In Case of Dispute Over Lands

Talladega, January 5

Testimony in a case of equity was being taken by Hugh Fitzgerald of Anniston, official court reporter, as commissioner in court in Talladega Friday. About fifteen witnesses were being examined in the case of Mrs. Margaret Powe Payne vs Frank H. Powe and the Federal Land Bank of New Orleans. The case involves dispute over certain land near Sylacauga.

Dr. A.H. Nabors, former pastor of the 1st Methodist Church here, now in charge of 1st Church in Cullman, came over Monday and enjoyed a bird hunt with his friend T.P. Johnson and others. They report splendid luck the hunting party having gone over into Clay during part of the hunt. Dr. Nabors returned to Cullman Wednesday. Paid his poll tax and says he will retain his citizenship in Sylacauga for awhile longer at least.

Mrs. W.J. Limbaugh, Sylacauga, Route 2, was the winner of the handsome $100 diamond ring offered by the Wood Jewelry Co. Mrs. Limbaugh was appraised of her good luck Christmas Eve night by her son who lives in Sylacauga and it proved a happy gift.

Miss Helen Harrington of Chicago will arrive about the 15th to spend several weeks with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harrington. She will be accompanied by her aunt Mrs. Jessie Hanbury.

Mrs. Louise Prather left the first of the week for Columbus, Georgia where she will take a business course.

Miss Elizabeth Riley of Evergreen, Alabama is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Riley at Walco.

Mr. L.T. Rush of Goodwater was in the city this week trading. He reports things lively in Goodwater, but states that the recent cold snap has killen (sic) the oats and young cabbage plants.

Dr. J.H. Hill of Talladega was in the city Wednesday afternoon in interest of the health work in the undrained districts of Sylacauga.

At 7:30 Monday night at the Baptist study Miss Irlene Norred was married to Dr. H.D. McDonald. Dr. A.H. Reid performing the ceremony. Both the bride and groom are popular young people of Talladega Springs. Immediately after the ceremony they left for a trip to St. Louis and Chicago, after which they will make their home in Talladega Springs.

Miss Lillie Park, sister of Mrs. Tom Hagen and a student at the 4th District School, had a narrow escape at the Hagan home Tuesday morning when painfully burned by kerosene explosion from an Arcola heater. She attempted to start the fire in the Arcola by pouring kerosene in the grate thinking there was no fire in it when the explosion occurred the flame burning her face and neck. Medical attention was rendered at once and there will be no serious results.

Sylacauga People Will Share in Key Estate

Eight Birmingham persons are among heirs to the vast Key estate in NYC, declared to be worth from $100,000,000 to $2000,000,000, according to Mrs. Rebecca Key Bagby, 146 Davies St., Woodlawn. The Property of this estate, which was reverted to the heirs after the expiration of a 99 year lease, in the heart of the NY retail district.

“Martin Key, of England, who married the younger sister of Lady Anne Grey, was the first of his family to come to the country. His grandson, John Key, who was the first white child born of English parents in Philadelphia, was one of the pioneer settlers of Albermarle County, Virginia, having emigrated to that state in 1732. His son, Martin, who married Nancy Bibb, of the same state, had 12 children as follows: Thomas, John, Martin, Tandy, Joshua, William Bibb, Henry, Jesse, James, Walter, Elizabeth and Martha. The descendants of these heirs of Martin Key are scattered throughout the Southern states and quite a number of them are now in Georgia. “Among the legal heirs are the descendants of William Bibb (son of Martin), who was the first of the family to come to this state. Soon after the Revolution, Tandy Clark, James and Henry, Jr., sons of Henry, Sr. (he, the son of Martin) came to this state from South Carolina and settled in Burke and Jefferson Counties. In about 1815, Joshua, (he, the son of Thomas, who was a son of Martin) came to Augusla, thence to Burke County. Later Joseph, the son of Tandy, who was the son of Martin, settled in middle Georgia.”

From general information gathered there seems to also be some Talladega County relatives who will share pretty heavily in the estate. They are Mrs. E.J. Smith of Sylacauga and Mrs. Mollie Key Kidd of Childersburg.

Auto Accident

An automobile accident occurred last Thursday night in front of the home of Mr. C.W. Hammett when Mr. Horace Maddocks backed his car into Tom Powers an old negro man who was riding a horse. As it appeared, Mr. Maddocks had gotten into his car and was backing in order to turn around and the negro was just behind the car evidently unseen by the driver. Seeing the car coming, the horse made frantic efforts to get out of the way and finally reared up on his hind feet falling over together with the old man. Whether the car struck the horse or he tripped himself and fell was hard to tell by the observers. By falling to the side perhaps accounts for the car not passing over either. Mr. Maddocks immediately got out and offered assistance to the negro who claimed he was not seriously hurt, but just stunned. He was assisted on his horse and went home. The next day the negro reported at the Levie & Son Milling Co. where he is employed, suffering from considerable sprains and bruises and has been unable to work since.

Just a few days before this happened, Tom Powers, while driving the dray of the Levie Milling Co. was also run into by a car breaking down on of his wheels. He did not know the name of the driver of the car, who backed out of the wreck and whizzed away.
