3 February 1926

S.H. Henderson Died Early Sunday Morning

Death Claimed Mr. Henderson While He Peacefully Slept at Home

Funeral services for S.H. Henderson, who died at his home on South Street [Talladega] early Sunday morning were conducted from his late residence Tuesday morning, February 2nd at 10:00 o’clock and was followed by interment in Oak Hill cemetary (sic). The services were in charge of Dr. J.M. Thomas pastor of the First Baptist church of which Mr. Henderson was a member, assisted by Rev. A.C. Ormond.

The active pallbearers were Dr. S.W. Welch, J.K. Dixon, M.N. Manning, W.H. Boynton, R. Heine, R.M. Jemison, Judge S.C. Oliver and H.L. McElderry. The honorary pallbearers were composed of the physicians of the county, Mr. Henderson’s associates and employees in business, proprietors of the city drug stores and the Board of Deacons of the First Baptist church.

No more shocking death has ever occurred in the city than that of Mr. Henderson. In good health and the best of spirit Saturday evening, early Sunday morning he was found dead in bed at his home on South street as the result of heart failure. When his lifeless body was discovered between seven and eight o’clock, it was apparent that he had only been dead a short while and that he had passed out without a struggle. Of his immediate family Mr. Henderson is survived by Mrs. Henderson who was Miss Zada Burr, two daughters, Mrs. H.O. Dumas of Texas, Mrs. M.W. Otey of Clearwater, Fla., and one son, S.H. Henderson, Jr. of Vidalia, La. His mother, Mrs. Jane Henderson of this city and three sisters, Miss Mamie Henderson of Shreveport, La., and Miss Carrie and Nan Henderson of Talladega also survive.

S.H. Henderson was a native of the city of Talladega, the son of the late R.M. Henderson. He was born in Talladega, December 25th, 1861 and all his life had been spent here in the same line of business, that of a druggist, in which he succeeded his father. The business of which he was the head, was one of the oldest and most honorable in the state of Alabama.
