So often when doing our family’s genealogy, we only get the hard facts. Information about our ancestor’s lives, how they lived, what they did for entertainment, who their friends were, etc. is very hard to come by. It’s my hope that you’ll find your relative mentioned somewhere in the newspaper articles that will be published here.
The newspapers are located in the B.B. Comer Memorial Library in Sylacauga, Alabama. They also have a fantastic genealogy collection rivaled only by the “big city” libraries. Their special collection of noted local genealogist, the late Carolyn Luttrell is priceless. Their holdings are primarily Talladega, Coosa and Clay Counties.
Adding the articles to this site will be a slow process, but certainly an enjoyable one on my part. I do proofread, but I know there will be typographical errors. Then there is also the dilemma of whether to print the typos that were in the newspapers. I’ve chosen to correct their misspellings for easier readability. I’ve also chosen not to change their wording that we now consider politically incorrect. It’s difficult to type some of those words, but we have to remember they were politically correct at the time.
Another thing to mention is that these papers are bound into large books like we find in old courthouse records. At times, some of the words in center articles are hidden in the spine. If there is any doubt about the word or name, I’ve used underscores instead of letters.
I hope to continue on with other types of local history not easily found elsewhere. If your ancestors were here in Sylacauga and you have a web site featuring them, I’d love to add a link. Also, if you have old pictures of locales and/or people and don’t mind sharing them I can add them here with credit going to you, of course. On the same token, if you use anything from this site on the internet, please link back to it.
Thank you and enjoy!
